From a Coffee Plant to a Coffee Cup

    Lots of people enjoy drinking coffee. But where does it come from? Read on to learn how coffee ends up in your cup!

    Coffee is one of the most popular drinks in the world. Many people drink it because it wakes them up. Others drink it because they like the taste. Whatever their reasons, though, people everywhere drink it!

    To make coffee, people need coffee beans. People roast the beans, then grind them up. They are left with coffee grounds. People soak these coffee grounds in hot water. The hot water becomes coffee, and is ready to be sipped! Where do coffee beans come from? They come from a plant! Coffee beans are seeds. The coffee plant grows fruits known as coffee cherries. The seeds inside of these cherries are what we know as coffee beans.

    The coffee plant first grew in Africa. But now, it grows in many places. Today, coffee plants are grown in parts of Africa, Asia, Central America, and South America. The seeds from these plants are harvested and sold around the world. That way, people everywhere can enjoy one of their favorite drinks!

China terracotta army

China's Terracotta Army

    In 1974, farmers in China were digging a well when they came across something very special. They discovered the site of a Chinese emperor's tomb! In that tomb were a huge variety of figures and sculptures, made of a material called terracotta.

    The Terracotta Army is a vast collection of terracotta sculptures that was constructed more than 2000 years ago by the Chinese Emperor Qin Shihuang. Beginning at the age of thirteen, Emperor Qin ordered the development of a guarded city in his future tomb. He wanted an army of warriors, along with their sturdy horses and sharpened weapons, to protect him in death. In his underground fortress, there were even stables made for the terracotta horses!

    In addition to the terracotta figures, the tomb was filled with valuable possessions like gold, silver, and jade jewelry. This construction project was estimated to have lasted 38 years, which is actually not that long considering the amount of detail put into all 8,000 terracotta figures. One of the most impressive things about the terracotta army is that each warrior's face is unique, conveying personality and emotion.

    This tomb site was discovered by farmers in 1974 and, immediately following this amazing discovery, archaeologists began carefully excavating the tomb. The excavation has been a continuous process, and archaeologists continue to discover new things. One of the terracotta court performers, including acrobats.

    Experts believe the tomb was never fully completed! Can you imagine what else Emperor Qin might have wanted in his burial place?

    Animals can be grouped by their traits. A trait is the way an animal looks or acts. Animals get traits from their parents. Traits can be used to group animals. Animals with backbones belong to one group. A vertebrate is an animal with a backbone. Vertebrates' backbones grow as they get older. Fish, snakes, and cats are all vertebrates. Vertebrates can look very different.

    Fish are vertebrates that live in water. Fish have scaly skin. They breathe through gills. Amphibians are vertebrates. They can live on land. Amphibians breathe through gills when they are young. They also get oxygen through their skin. As they grow, they develop lungs. Toads and frogs are amphibians. 

    Reptiles are vertebrates with scaly skin. Crocodiles and alligators are reptiles. They breathe through lungs. Snakes, lizards, and turtles are reptiles too. Birds are vertebrates that breathe through lungs. They have bills instead of teeth. Wings and light bones help most birds fly. Their feathers keep them warm.

   Mammals are vertebrates. Mammals have hair on their bodies. This keeps them warm. They breathe through lungs. Mammals feed milk to their young.

 Deciduous And Coniferous 

    Trees are a kind of plant. Two types of trees are deciduous trees. The leaves on deciduous trees fall off every year when the weather gets cold. Deciduous trees grow new leaves in the spring, when the weather gets warm again. Coniferous trees shed and replace their leaves throughout the year.

    Deciduous trees are flowering plants. They grow their seeds inside things like fruits and nuts. Oak, apple, and maple trees are deciduous trees. Coniferous trees do not have flowers. They grow seeds in cones. Pine, spruce, and fir trees are coniferous trees.

   Coniferous trees grow two types of cones. The small cones make pollen. The large cones can grow seeds. A coniferous tree gets pollinated when the wind blows pollen from the small cones to the large cones.

    The seeds inside the large cones ripen. Cones with ripe seeds fall to the ground. Then the seeds can germinate in the soil. If the seeds get the right amount of water, space, and sunlight, they grow into new trees. Later, the new trees will make their own large and small cones. When that happens, the life cycle of the evergreen trees will start again.

 Work

    Did you know that you work every time you cause something, including yourself, to move or change position? Scientists think of work as the use of force to move an object. Playing tag is actually work, since you are moving your body. The amount of work that is done depends on how much force is used and how far the object is moved.

   Think about trying to push a wall again. Even if you pushed as hard as you could and used great force, you would not move that wall. Since work is done only when force makes something move, no work would be done.

   Is there another way to move that wall? Maybe you are thinking that a machine could be used to move the wall. You are right to think of using a machine. A machine would be able to push the wall with more force.

Growing a seed

 Growing a Seed

A flowering plant grows from a single seed. Seeds are formed in the flower of a plant. To make seeds, a plant has to be pollinated. A plant will pollinate when pollen gets moved near the center of a flower to a part that makes seeds. Seeds then form in the middle of the flower.

A flower is made up of several parts. Its outside parts are called petals. Petals are often brightly colored to attract birds and insects. This helps with the pollination process. The wind can also carry pollen to pollinate a plant.

 Growing Trees

Trees, like most other plants, grow from seeds. Not many seeds grow into mature trees. Some seeds get digested inside animals' bodies after being eaten, and never reach the ground. Other seeds land in places where they cannot grow. If a seed lands in a place with good soil, sunlight, and water, it may start sprouting into a plant. When a seed begins to grow into a plant it is called germination.

First a small root develops. Then a stem begins to grow. After the stem starts growing, the seedcase falls off.

The seed leaves are the plant's first leaves. While the food in these leaves nourishes the plant, the first true leaves form. Those leaves begin to make sugar for the plant to use as food. When conditions permit, the seedling may eventually grow into a tree.

 Traveling Light 

Light travels very fast-much faster than sound. That's why you see a flash of lightning before you hear the sound of thunder, even though both happen at exactly the same time. 

Light travels in straight lines. A flashlight's beam shows this. If you shine a flashlight on a wall, you can mark where its beam of light hits. The distance from the mark back to the flashlight is always a straight line.

Traveling light rays react differently when they reach different types of materials. Transparent materials allow all light rays to travel through them. Translucent materials allow some light to shine through them. Frosted glass, stained-glass windows, and dark sunglasses are translucent. Opaque materials, such as doors, walls, and our bodies, block out all light rays. Opaque materials absorb and reflect light.

 What is energy?

Energy is the ability to do work or cause change. Work is when force causes an object to move. Most of our energy comes from the Sun. The Sun heats Earth. The Sun's light energy makes plants grow.

We use many other forms of energy too. Sound energy comes from a CD player. Chemical energy runs a car's engine. Electrical energy runs many things in this kitchen. 

Stored energy is potential energy. It can change into another kind of energy to do work or cause a change.

Fuel, such as natural gas, has potential energy. Long ago, plants made food using energy from the Sun. The plants died and turned into fossils that are used as fuel. When we burn this fuel, we free potential energy. Work is possible.

When you use batteries, you release potential energy. The stored energy in food, fuels, and batteries is chemical energy.

 What causes sounds?

Take a walk in the city. Cities are noisy. Car horns honk. Buses and garbage trucks roar by. People talk on the street. It is much quieter in the country. Birds chirp. Cows moo. Water trickles in a creek.

Sounds are everywhere. Some sounds you hear may hurt your ears. You may like other sounds. Each sound you hear is different. Sounds are also alike in some ways.

Sound happens when matter moves back and forth very quickly. This movement is called a vibration. There must be movement to make sound.

The instruments pictured make sounds. They can make high sounds. They can make low sounds. Pitch is how high or low a sound is. Objects that vibrate slowly make a low-pitched sound. Objects that vibrate quickly make sounds that have a higher pitch.

What makes up weather?

Weather is what the air is like outside. The air temperature is part of the weather. So is the water in the air. the wind speed and kinds of clouds are part of the weather too.

Most clouds are made of water droplets. Clouds hang in the air. When a cloud can't hold any more water, it rains. Puffy, white clouds  usually mean good weather. Dark clouds often bring rain.

You might say that the weather is hot today. But your friend might disagree. To your friend, the weather might tot feel hot. So scientists use tools to measure the weather. That way, we know exactly what the weather is like!

 How to living things interact?

Living things interact in many ways. An interaction between them can be helpful. I may help a living thing survive. Animals living in groups help each other. One kind of living thing may help another. Two different kinds of living things may help each other.

Think about these examples. Many animals live in herds together. The animals of herd protect each other. Flowers need light to grow. Sometimes flowers grow on the trees. Then they can get more light. Insects drink nectar from flowers. When they do this, they spread the flowers' pollen to other flowers.

Water

Why is water important?

Living things need water. Trees and snails need water to grow. Green plants must have water to make food. The fish need oxygen in water.

People bodies need water. Water makes up about two-thirds of your body. It helps you in many ways. Water helps digest food and carries things.

Water helps you change temperature. When you cold, it helps your body warm. When you hot, it might sweat. Sweat is a kind of water. It carries heat away from you.

Some animals only live in water. You can see many of these with your own eyes. Others are tiny. You can't see those animals without help.

My vacation

 My Vacation

Last February, my dad drove us to Dong Nai with my mom and my younger brother. In the early morning at 2:00, we had to drive 723 kilometers then to Binh Dinh. When we arrived, I was so excited, but it's to late to play with my brother and cousins. So, my family and my cousin family took a shower then we went to sleep. 

On the first day, I went to my uncle's house in Binh Dinh, I played the game 'hide and seek' with my cousins from the morning till the afternoon. After that, we went to the really big field to fly a kite. We had many problems when we flew a kite. The kite was hanging on the tree, but we had a lot of fun that day. 

During the second day, I walked with my brother and my cousin to my uncle house to invite my other cousin to go to the beach. We swam and we picked up some shells, too. After that, we went to the restaurant to eat seafood. In this restaurant, we enjoyed a lot of delicious seafood, like crabs, shells, crawfish,... Next, we went to eat something, then we went back my uncle house at 8:30, so we were ready for bed.

On the third day, I'm really excited to walk to my aunt's house! In my aunt's house, I could see a garden with a lot of beautiful flowers. Then we went to my dad older brother's house to eat food made by my aunts. It's the best food ever. After that, I rode a bike around the garden and we could watch TV, too. Then we went back my uncle house and made a party. What a great day! 

It was about time to go home. I didn't like going home, I want to stay there for long to play with my cousin, but I had three happy days! I will never forget those days!

A Day In The Life 

My name is Levic, I'm 10 now, and I am ready to go to fifth grade. I'm from Ho Chi Minh city, a lot of people in Vietnam live here because has a lot of modern tools at here. I'm going to tell you about my day in the life!

In the morning, my mom always prepares breakfast for every member of the family. I help mom whenever I want because it's not my job now. After breakfast, I wash the dishes for my mom. Then, I get dressed and get my books ready to go to school. My school starts at 7:00 o'clock and finishes at 4:20. I go back home and help my mom do the housework a few hours. When the housework is done, I do my homework and then my family watch TV together. 

But at the weekend, Mom and dad takes me to Di An city to go roller skating. I'm so excited! When I feel bored to play more, I ask my dad to buy ice cream for me and my little brother and we can eat them. It's really yummy, and my brother loves it too!

In the evenings, before we go to sleep, we go outside for a walk about thirty minutes. After that, my family go inside to our room and my mom hugs each of us and we enjoy the good night. 

I love my day because I have a lot of things to do and see, so my day is really interesting!

My favorite teacher

My favorite teacher name is Ms. Hien. She teaches in class 4/6, Nguyen Van Banh school. She wears big black glasses, she usually wears flowery blouses and pants. She is really beautiful, smart, and gentle.

She teaches me math, history, geography,... She does a lot of activities at school. Sometimes, I participate in some of her activities such as drawing, singing, dancing. I'm really happy when I enjoy a great time with her and other friends. After each competition, she always treats us something to eat or drink. 

I really like her because she teaches me good things and sets a good example for me. I'm so happy when I have a good teacher like her. 

She will be always in my mind!

My Best Mom

My Best Mommy 

My mommy is old now. She 37 years old, she is a teacher. She works at school, and the school name is Cong Thuong. She's cute, good at English, and she loves her kids. She teaches English for me in her free time. Sometimes, she speaks English with me and my brother. She always buys toys for me when I get 10. 

 In the morning, my mom and I cook food to my family. After breakfast, we study English together. When we finish, I and my brother can watch TV. At noon, We eat lunch and have a chat together. Next, my family take a nap for an hour. In the afternoon, I must cook with my mom again. After dinner, we watch TV together. In the evening, that is the time my family go to sleep. Before we sleep , my mom hugs each of us. Finally, we hope to sleep well together and my family enjoy the good night .

After everything, I learn from mom a lot of things, I'm precious to her. I want to study well to make mom happy.

 My best friend 

My best friend's name is Nhi. She is 10 years old now. She lived next to my house when I was younger. She played with me in her free time. I was precious to her. Sometimes we were in arguments each other, and some minutes later, we played together again. She is cute, smart, but she's not very tall. We always play together. She has two big eyes. I want to see her smile. On my birthday, She came to my house, sat next to me and we ate cake with my other friends.

When I was 7 years old, I had to move house, to HCM City. I wanted to cry, but I was a bit shy.

I moved to my new house, I was so sad, but I love my new house now. On my birthday, I hope she can come to my new house and I would be so surprised!

She is my best friend ever!
